Frequently Asked Questions about Kundli

What is a Kundli?
A Kundli (also called Janam Kundli or Janam Patri) is a Vedic astrology birth chart that maps the positions of planets at the exact moment of your birth. It uses the sidereal zodiac system and includes your Rashi (Moon sign), Lagna (Ascendant), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), and the positions of all nine Vedic planets (Navagraha). Kundli is the foundation of all Vedic astrology readings, predictions, and matchmaking.
How is Kundli different from a Western birth chart?
Kundli uses the sidereal zodiac (based on actual star positions), while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (based on seasons). This creates a roughly 24-degree difference called the Ayanamsa. Vedic astrology emphasizes the Moon sign (Rashi) as your primary sign, uses 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions) for deeper insights, and includes Rahu and Ketu (lunar nodes) as key planets. The traditional Kundli chart uses a distinctive North Indian diamond layout.
What if I don't know my exact birth time?
Check the "I don't know my birth time" box and we'll use noon as a default. Your Sun sign and most planetary positions will still be accurate. However, the Lagna (Ascendant) changes sign roughly every 2 hours, and the Moon moves about 12-13 degrees per day, so your Rashi and Lagna may be off. Check your birth certificate or hospital records for the most precise time.
What are Rashi, Lagna, and Nakshatra?
Rashi is your Vedic Moon sign — the sidereal zodiac sign where the Moon was placed at your birth. It reveals your emotional nature and mind, and is considered the most important sign in Vedic astrology. Lagna is your Ascendant — the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth moment. It shapes your personality and physical appearance. Nakshatra is your birth star — one of 27 lunar mansions that divides the zodiac into finer segments of 13°20' each, providing deeper personality insights and governing the Dasha system of planetary periods.
How accurate is this free Kundli calculator?
Our Kundli calculator uses the Astronomy Engine library based on VSOP87 planetary theory — the same models used by professional astronomers. We apply the Lahiri Ayanamsa (Chitrapaksha), the official ayanamsa adopted by the Indian government for panchang calculations. Planetary positions are accurate to within 1 arcminute. The most important factor for accuracy is having your exact birth time.
Can I share my Kundli on Instagram?
Absolutely! After generating your Kundli, click "Download for Instagram" to save a beautifully designed card optimized for Instagram stories (1080 x 1920 pixels). On mobile, you can also tap "Share" to send it directly to any app. Tag us @askmercurious to get featured!
