A Kundli (also called Janam Kundli or Janam Patri) is a Vedic astrology birth chart that maps the positions of planets at the exact moment of your birth. It uses the sidereal zodiac system and includes your Rashi (Moon sign), Lagna (Ascendant), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), and the positions of all nine Vedic planets (Navagraha). Kundli is the foundation of all Vedic astrology readings, predictions, and matchmaking.

Kundli uses the sidereal zodiac (based on actual star positions), while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (based on seasons). This creates a roughly 24-degree difference called the Ayanamsa. Vedic astrology emphasizes the Moon sign (Rashi) as your primary sign, uses 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions) for deeper insights, and includes Rahu and Ketu (lunar nodes) as key planets. The traditional Kundli chart uses a distinctive North Indian diamond layout.

However, the Lagna (Ascendant) changes sign roughly every 2 hours, and the Moon moves about 12-13 degrees per day, so your Rashi and Lagna may be off. Our Kundli calculator uses the Astronomy Engine library based on VSOP87 planetary theory — the same models used by professional astronomers. We apply the Lahiri Ayanamsa (Chitrapaksha), the official ayanamsa adopted by the Indian government for panchang calculations. Planetary positions are accurate to within 1 arcminute. The most important factor for accuracy is having your exact birth time.
