Kundli Matching Explained: How Guna Milan Actually Works

Kundli matching is built almost entirely around the Moon — specifically, which of the 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions) the Moon sits in in each person's chart at the moment of birth. In Vedic astrology, the Moon governs the mind and emotional nature far more than the Sun does in Western astrology, so a compatibility system built on it is really asking: will these two minds get along day to day?

Both charts need to be calculated on the sidereal zodiac — the system Vedic astrology uses, offset from the tropical zodiac by roughly 24° (the ayanamsa, using the Lahiri calculation most Indian astrologers default to). This is why someone's Vedic Moon sign can land in a different sign than their Western one, even from the same birth data.

Guna Milan splits compatibility into 8 categories (kootas), each worth a different number of points, adding up to 36:

• Varna (1 point) — spiritual/work temperament compatibility, the oldest and least-weighted factor
• Vashya (2 points) — mutual influence and control in the relationship
• Tara (3 points) — general wellbeing and luck as a pair

• Bhakoot (7 points) — the relationship between the two Moon signs themselves, tied to long-term prosperity and harmony
• Nadi (8 points) — physiological and genetic compatibility, the single heaviest-weighted koota in the whole system

Once all 8 kootas are added up, the conventions most Indian astrologers use look roughly like this:

• Below 18 — generally considered not recommended, though this isn't universal
• 18–24 — an average, workable match
• 25–32 — a good match
• 32–36 — an excellent match, considered rare

A couple of things worth knowing before treating this number as gospel. First, 18 out of 36 is the conventional minimum, not a hard scientific threshold — it's a tradition, and traditions vary by region and family. Second, a low total score doesn't automatically mean incompatibility; a couple can score modestly overall but still have zero Nadi dosha and strong Graha Maitri, which many astrologers weigh more heavily than the raw total.

Alongside Guna Milan, you'll often hear about Manglik dosha (also called Mangal dosha) — a separate check, not part of the 36-point system. It looks at whether Mars sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the Lagna (Ascendant) in a person's chart. If it does, that person is considered "Manglik."

The traditional concern is that a Manglik person paired with a non-Manglik person can bring friction or instability into the marriage — Mars being the planet of conflict and drive. The traditional fix is straightforward: if both people are Manglik, the dosha is considered cancelled out, since the energy is matched rather than one-sided.

Guna Milan is genuinely useful for what it measures: emotional temperament, communication style, and physiological compatibility, all inferred from Moon placement. Two people whose Moons are in harmonious nakshatras often do report an easier day-to-day rhythm together.

Where it falls short is everything it doesn't measure. It says almost nothing about the Sun, Venus, or Mars placements that Western synastry weighs heavily for romantic chemistry, and it says nothing at all about shared values, life goals, or how two people actually communicate under stress. A high Guna Milan score with a difficult Venus-Mars dynamic, or a middling score with excellent Graha Maitri and clean Nadi, are both real possibilities the number alone won't tell you apart.

A proper kundli match needs accurate birth details for both people — date, time, and place, ideally to the minute, since nakshatra boundaries shift within a day and an imprecise birth time can push a chart into the wrong one entirely.
